Latin course for the Virtual School of Languages
Introduction to the course
Back to the main page
The Free online Latin course is aimed at English-speaking people from all over the world, who want to learn
Latin, the language of the Romans, while also learning about Roman culture and mythology. The online course is
suitable for complete beginners as well as intermediate learners, who will also find original texts that are not as
difficult to understand as Caesar or Ovid for example. However, the goal is to enable the learner to read original
texts by classical Latin authors. Church Latin is not taught, but after doing this course, it'll only take learning
the ecclesiastical vocabulary and common expressions in order to understand Church Latin.
It is a completely free course for self-study. One can even send in tests to be corrected and ask questions. All
necessary material is available from the main page; nothing has to be bought in addition. The online lessons
include a text in Latin, a list of all new vocabulary, a section explaining the new grammar, exercises that can
be corrected by yourself and a section on one aspect of Roman culture. Every three or four lessons, there is
a test that you can complete and e-mail to the author, as a means of controlling whether you understood
everything.
There are "Extra reading" pages for the later lessons, which can also be used by intermediate
learners. Additionally, you can find explanations of grammar terms, translation technique, Roman numerals and
mythology; study recommendations and a list of recommended books (not free); an online dictionary containing
all the Latin vocabulary of the free course and links to other Latin-related pages.
All this makes the Free online Latin course an immensely valuable resource for anybody learning Latin in self-study,
or even as supplementary material for those learning Latin at school.
The Free online Latin course is part of the Virtual School of Languages project, which was invented by Unilang,
an online community of language lovers. Click here to go directly to the index of lessons. Or click here in order
